Hospital duty week is over. 3 days ago in fact. Anyway, let me recount what I did throughout my five days at CGH, ward 49. FIRST DAY Reached Simei rather early, around 11.30am. Walked around Eastpoint Mall. Not too bad a place, since it's got a lot of food places like Banquet, Han River and other fast food restaurants. Only thing missing is the cinema. Anyway, when MH and Ben reached, we decided to walk to the hospital which was just 500m away. Quite near eh. I separated from them as they were attached to a different ward. I went to my own ward and approached the receptionist, then a nurse. Blablabla. I changed into full u and waited for my shift to start, alone. Then, woohoo! Some people I recognised from Advanced Course came, they're from BMSS. Hehe. But I kind of forgot their names then. Lol. Anyway, I was quite relieved cos misery loves company =) No offence. Basically, for the first hour or so into our shift, we just stood around looking at the patients. I'm attached to a male ward, mostly old people. Sad. We didn't do much that day. Just distributed food at dinnertime and I fed a patient porridge. Before that, we observed how blood pressure is taken and how a patient's suger level is determined. Not too bad for a first day. I think one of the patients, 33, (my friends and I used their bed numbers as we have no idea what their names are) threw a tantrum that day. I guess he wanted to go down to 7-eleven. Lol. He went wandering and security officers had to guard him at his bed. SECOND DAY That happened again the next day. Haha. We confirmed he was one of the interesting patients to watch out for the next few days. So, first thing we did was observing wound dressing, which took almost an hour, since there were nearly 10 wounds. I think the nurse said the wounds were due to long term pressure sores. Imagine how long already... Then, we distributed drinks and bread at teatime. That was one of the few things that was enjoyable. Haha. THIRD DAY Hehe. I think it was on the third day that the NS guy was admitted. Oh, I almost forgot. On the first day, there was a HOT doctor. I shortened it to HOTDOC. Haha. Funny right. It was only on the first day and fourth day that I saw him. Haiz. Ok, back to the NS guy. I termed him as 23 cos duh, that's his bed no. Haha. He became my obsession cos in a ward full of old men, I need to get a life sometime right. Anyway, it was also for my friends' entertainment. Lol. I guess he was cute, from afar. His specs (the army type) made him look more adorable. Hahahaahahah. I'm hopeless. Anyway, at dinnertime, I made sure I got his tray so I can deliver to him. Haha. But I felt bad afterwards when I just left the tray without pushing the table to him. Or what ever you call it. Then he had to 'painstakingly' (no idea what ailment he has) maneuver the table toward him. Argh, should I punch myself? Lol, kidding. Other than that, we observed tube-feeding through stomach. Not as disgusting as it sounds. Then, there was administration of IV antibiotics for some patient and so on. FOURTH DAY The most interesting thing we observed today was the inserting of a new feeding tube for a patient. The nurse took some measurements using the tube then inserted the tube slowly through the nose. The sad thing was when I saw the old patient shed a tear. Must be really painful but he didn't struggle since he was used to it. Today, 23 got discharged. He changed into his uniform. He looked skinny. Haha. But quite tanned. Anyway, I was disappointed that I didn't get the opportunity to deliver his food at dinnertime. FIFTH DAY Last day. We helped return food trays and observed a doctor taking blood samples. Lucky we didn't get lectured by 44, like we did on 2nd/3rd/4th day. Haha. He talked about a lot of wise stuff. But we all just nodded in agreement at whatever he says since half the time we can't hear him clearly. So that's about it. 42 is another interesting patient cos he likes to wander around and quite buddy-buddy with 33. Haha. For the most part, the hospital attachment was a good experience. Doesn't make me more desired to become a nurse, or otherwise. Don't think I want to become one though. I may volunteer but probably won't serve permanently. Okie-dokie. Stay tuned for my many top ten lists. Hahaa. Bye bye. irnasrina Notepaper.
