what a way to spend a sunday. headed to 4PM in bedok in the morning for mentor training as part of MLDDS CIP. i thought it was going to be drag but it turned to be quite fun actually... there was the theory segment where the trainers briefed us on what it meant to be a mentor. in short, a mentor is a friend who listens and tries to reach out to his/her mentee and he/she is by no means a counsellor or yet another nagging parent. the practical part comprised mainly role-playing skits between a mentor and mentee to familiarise us with possible scenarios. it seems rather challenging to be mentoring someone who is plagued with problems which are vastly different from your own, problematic family backgrounds and difficult life choices. for me, life hasn't exactly been smooth-sailing all the way but at least, i haven't had to choose to abort or keep a baby, show up for a gang fight and risk getting caught, live life on the streets and so on. i don't exactly know anyone who has suffered the above circumstances but now, i realise more than ever, that such people do exist in society and that's why they need someone to turn to. Not to rebuke them for their mistakes, but someone to understand and reassure them that they're not alone in their sufferings. that there will always be someone around to lend a helping hand, a listening ear. i hope i can help. somehow. irnasrina Notepaper.
